Now in its third year, Cause + Effect is the only Georgia-focused progressive film festival. Hosted by nonprofit The Alliance for a Better Georgia, Cause + Effect Progressive Film Festival encourages Georgia filmmakers to submit 2-15 minute films that shed light on a political, environmental, economic or social justice issue in their community.

In the spirit of promoting accessibility for all, Cause + Effect  is one of the few film festivals that requires no entry fee for filmmakers. For the past two years, The Alliance for a Better Georgia has kept tickets free as well. Anyone can enter, and anyone can watch these compelling films to learn about the issues that Georgians are facing today.

We believe that everyone should be able to both share and experience empowering stories.

Sponsorships are what make this possible. You can empower Georgia filmmakers that are making a difference in our state.

We want to thank everyone that contributes, so we recognize all sponsors by name and logo through Better Georgia’s 143,000+ member Facebook audience, 100,000+ audience email list, the film festival website and social media channels as well as in press releases to media outlets.

So far, this year’s sponsors include Parents/Supporters of Clarke County Schools, UGA’s Grady College, UGA’s Office of Sustainability, Woodland Gardens, The National, Bel-Jean and Ciné.

This is your chance to be part of a community that’s working toward a more progressive Georgia. In the past, we’ve accepted films with a diverse range of filmmakers, topics and genres, all of which centered around exploring the most critical issues facing our state and offering viewers a way to take action after the film is over.

Cause + Effect values important issues and great storytelling over high production value, so filmmakers do not need expensive cameras or equipment. Each year, we receive entries from Georgia filmmakers of varying ages, backgrounds, locations and skill level. Some Cause + Effect filmmakers are just making their first film, while others are professional filmmakers who make their living in the industry.

The 2016 grand-prize winners were two eighth grade students from Clarke Middle School in Athens who tackled stereotypes around teenage depression. Our other winning films include an animated short by an assistant professor of film at Georgia Gwinnett College that highlighted waste reduction, a short biopic on a veteran farmer from a professional filmmaker duo and a drama from an Atlanta-based filmmaker that focused on poverty and education.

You can watch all of the 2015 and 2016 finalist films online here.
